  • Gel Caps - DIY Light Painting Gels For Your Flashlight

Gel Caps - DIY Light Painting Gels For Your FlashlightZeke K. is the guest author of this post. Of course, you'd probably figure this out yourself after getting to the "Nice!" at the end of the post.

Ah, light painting. Thanks to digital photography, light painting has never been easier to get the kind of effects you are looking for. Lock that shutter open, mess around with your flashlight, check the results on the screen. Didn't work? Adjust and repeat. Lovely!

But maybe you want more than just lovely. Maybe you want color! That's where gels come in. Next time you are in a photo store or making an order from an online shop, pick up a pack of the Lee or Rosco sample gels. You'll have access to every color in the rainbow, even "Cosmetic Silver Rose." Did you even know that color was in the rainbow? I didn't.

  • Cross Processing Tips and Suggestions
It's no secret… I love film photography. But if there's one thing I love more than film, it's cross processed film. There's something so intriguing about it — adding a touch of unpredictable to the imperfect nature of film. Many photographers tend to either hate it or love it. Some love it so much that they attempt to recreate the look with Photoshop. Here are some tips for choosing films to cross process, exposing the film, getting it developed, and color correcting it. So grab a cheap film camera start cross processing!

  • Welcome Tronix

Please join me in welcoming Innovatronix as a sponsor for DIYP. Innovatronix are the makers of the awesome Explorer XT battery pack I reviewed just a while ago.

If you did not read the review yet, let me fill you in quickly. Tronix make a killer battery-pack that you can take outdoors and power your favorite studio lighting anywhere in the world. OK, not anywhere, you need to actually be able to be on location yourself.

If you are bummed about using speedlights anytime you leave the studio, you'll surely appreciate the portability.

…Ok, so that’s a bit of a sensationalist headline.  I don’t really hate it.  But I’m going to offer a bit of a contriarian view on the much venerated “fast zoom” type lens.   On pretty much any photgraphy fourm/discussion a question that pops up all the time is “I’m looking to upgrade from my “kit” [...]

  • Using A Cooling Honeycomb As A DIY Gridspot

DIY GridspotI just love gridspots. The amount of light control that a gridspot will give you is incredible. So, a while back I ordered some honeycomb grids from saxonpc. It is with two of those gridspots that I took the image on the left, but first thing first. In fact Saxon PC is specializing in making computer cooling solutions, little did they know that their honeycomb is just perfect for light control. OK, they knew, they made a site for it. Yet it was fun to say "little did they know".

One of the first projects on DIYP was a coroplast made gridspot, which totally rocked, but getting those nice black honeycombs ticked s much and I caved in.

In fact this solution is very similar to HonlPhoto's 1/4" and 1/8" gridspot solutions. If you are willing to settle a bit on the looks and spend a few minutes modding, you can save a few Dollars. Not that a few dollars will take you anywhere today.

  • What am I up to?

So it has been a crazy few weeks in my life so I thought I would do a super quick post to update you all.

    Hurricane Ike
Two and a half weeks ago Hurricane Ike rolled over Houston.  I still have friends without power.  Life is certainly not back to normal yet.  I'm in the process of trying to reschedule a class and 5 sessions that I had to cancel because of the hurricane and aftermath.  I'm also on hold to find out if I will need to reschedule my beach portrait sessions scheduled to take place on Galveston Island in just a couple of weeks.

    Sneakpeek_learnfest

    Learnfest
Last week I attended the inspiring Learnfest on Bald Head Island in North Carolina.  I have SOOOO much to write about it will certainly be a few posts.  I'm still trying to digest all that I learned.  I can say that Lena, Audrey, Tamara, and Laura went beyond my expectations with their open hearts and warm personalities.  And I feel like I have so many new friends made with the 60 attendees from the US and Canada.  My face hurt at the end of each day from all the smiling and laughing, and I loved getting to talk to so many fans to this blog too!!!

    New Office

And now that I'm home I'm trying to get my new office and gallery space finished up.  I can't even begin to describe how excited I am about this new space. There seems to be a never ending list of things that need to be purchased.  Paint.  Lights.  Special casters that don't damage hard wood floors.  But I know when the space is finished it is going to be great!  More later this week as I try to move in!!!

So, that's what I'm up to.  Oh, and yeah, lots of sessions this week and for every week between now and mid-November.  I have the beginning of a post about Learnfest and some others in mind so I'll try to find some time to get to those too!!!

  • More Power To Your Flash - External SLA Battery Flash Mod

More Power To Your Flash - External SLA Battery FlashIf you've been shooting with a flash for a while, I'm sure you had some battery problem or another at least once. Like when one of four batteries goes bad and quickly discharges the other three. Or when it's cold and the batteries don't hold their charge so well anymore. Wouldn't it be nice if you could have a more reliable source of power? One that virtually lasts for ever (well, not forever, but for a darn long time). This is probably on the wish list of anyone who is shooting off shoe and don't care much about weight, but do care about recycling time and number of pops that can be squeezed in a session.

Konstantin Sirotkin describes how to make a Flash mod that will allow you to connect your flash to an external power source.
Yes this is an external power source, no mater how bomb-like it looks.

  • The DIY R-Strap

The DIY R-StrapThere are several ways to wear your camera strap, you can wear it on your neck in what I'd love to call "The Lunchbox Carry"; you can wear it on your shoulder in a "Lazyman Hang" or you can ware it across your body, like soldiers are wearing their weapons in a "Weapon Cross". Which one is your favorite?

Now, each of these hangs can be rated on three factors:

    • How fast does it take you to bring the camera into a nice shooting position?
    • How comfortable is it?
    • How safe is it to your camera?

  • Photo Backup: An Intro to Data Security
Backing-up your photos is definitely important, but more important is getting in the habit of doing so. As time goes on and our skills increase, we tend to take more photos. Cameras keep getting bigger and pumping out more pixels too. I recently wrote about my exponential photo collection, and this illustrates what I'm talking about. If you don't have good habits with your backups right now, you'll be in a world of hurt one or two years down the road.
