  • A Primer In Selling Your Art At Festivals
The outdoor art festival season is winding down in the USA with Autumn winds and crisper weather on its way. If you’ve ever thought of running a stand at an art festival to sell your wares, now is a very good time to start planning for next season (while catching a bit of [...]

  • Thoughts on Photokina '08
Now that Photokina is all wrapped up something occurred to me - I can’t say I was really all that excited about it.  Surprising, as Photokina is usually the main “gear lust inspiring” event out there, and you can practically hear the mobs of photographers panting and salivating over each new announcement.  And sure there [...]

  • Having Fun @ The Pool #5

It is time for another great collection of DIYP reader's images.

I could not resist watching the images submitted to DIYP Flickr pool, no matter how late it became and mark a few favs.

The range of images, as always, is a great variety ranging from portraiture to still life to abstract.

I am going to try something new and make the next pool-fun all about portraiture.

Do submit studio portraits, opportunity portraits, kids portraits, on location portraits, off location portraits, self portraits, black and white portraits, friends portraits, OK, I think you get the point.

  • Lightroom Users Address Concerns with the Software
In a previous article, I stated 3 Reasons Why I Refuse to Use Lightroom. This got the Lightroom users pretty fired up. But I didn't write the article just to get these folks twisted up — I did it to get the discussion going. My "3 Reasons" are actually concerns that I've heard from various other photographers who haven't jumped into Lightroom yet (and they're my own concerns too). So I figured the best way to address these issues was through the community on this website. We had nearly 40 comments (and one blog post response) in just a few days, and most of them were addressing the concerns presented. This is so awesome — exactly the thing I was hoping for. Here are my "3 Reasons" addressed by the community.

  • Blog Boards

    Blogblock
I am so lucky - I got to try out a preview of the MCP Actions new Magic Blog It Boards actions.  They are super cool.  These are totally going to change the way I share images on my blog.

These actions provide you a way to quickly put together photo collages to that are web-sized and ready to display on your website or blog.  They are so easy to use....choose the number of photos from the action set and then just follow the prompts to fill in the blanks.  I'm so excited to use these for my sneak peeks on my photography blog.  It takes no time at all.  Then you can add branding bars and resize for the web column width that you need.

You can check out a video demo from the MCP site to see how it works.  They are scheduled to be released on 9/3/08.

Updated to add: The actions were released today for purchase for $65.  Here's the description from the website:

The MCP "Magic Blog It Board" photoshop actions create collages and display boards with between 2 and 16 openings. The actions insert photos for you and will drastically reduce the time you spend preparing collages, templates, and storyboards for your blog and site.

They work on Photoshop CS2 and CS3.  Visit the MCP Actions blog to learn more!

  • An Must-Hear Interview with Zoriah
I’ve mentioned this amazing war photographer, Zoriah, in a previous article here on the blog. Well… over at the PhotoNetCast, we took things a step further and got him on a conference call for an interview! This is something that you’ll definitely want to listen to. He talks about his past, present, and future in [...]

  • A micro four-thirds competitor already?
Micro four thirds is still vaporwave, and it seems there is already a competitor. Samsung is introducing what they seem to be calling a “hybrid” camera system - in other words the “EVIL” (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) system we’ve all been drooling over (hopefully!).  Not much said about specs/lenses - hopefully they will at least have [...]

  • Another Audrey Spot

It seems I've become a clearing house for workshop spots available for sold out workshops!

In my inbox came another request to share information for the upcoming workshop with Audrey Woulard at her loft in Chicago.  Here's the information and who to contact if you are interested:

I'm wondering if there is a possibility that you would post my ticket for Audrey Woulard's September 20 - 21 workshop.

I know it is last minute, but I am hoping there might be someone who will be able to have this amazing experience.   The cost is $800.00 and I will gladly take $600.00.  This is actually the last solo workshop she has planned for a while.

If anyone is interested they can email me at:  Jane@cosnerphotography.com .

I'm going to see Audrey later that same week at Learnfest but it would be awesome to see her on her home turf.

  • A DIY Optimus Maximus keyboard For GIMP, Photoshop or Lightroom

DIY Keyboard For Image Editing Software If you have not heard about the Optimus Maximus keyboard, let me fill you in.

The idea is simple: Use OLED technology to place a tiny monitor on each key; Make each such small monitor completely configurable, and updatable in runtime; have each button display any image depending on what you are currently doing with your computer.

The easiest example to grasp is that pressing the shift key will turn all "engravings" on the keyboard to CAPS. But a more interesting application would be a keyboard that displays the icons from your favorite image editing software. No more having to memorize what Ctrl + Shift + Alt + S does (it save for the web). Each key will display an image of its action. Isn't it nice?

Well, you are about top learn how to make an Optimus Maximus keyboard yourself.

Uwe  Mayer (flickr, site) and Markus Dollinger (if you read German) show us how to make a keyboard that well, kinda does the same. Actually, this DIY keyboard is more like the awesome keyboard you get from RPG keys, but you can make one on your own and it will only cost about 30-40$. (See demos here). I just could not pass on the Optimus introduction.

You can use this keyboard to expedite your Lightroom workflow, your Gimp experience or your Photoshop speed-keying.
